23(5): 2539.<\/h4>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-content-boxes content-boxes columns row fusion-columns-1 fusion-columns-total-1 fusion-content-boxes-1 content-boxes-icon-with-title content-left\" style=\"--awb-backgroundcolor:#efefef;--awb-hover-accent-color:var(--awb-color4);--awb-circle-hover-accent-color:var(--awb-color4);--awb-item-margin-bottom:40px;\" data-animationOffset=\"top-into-view\"><div style=\"--awb-backgroundcolor:#efefef;\" class=\"fusion-column content-box-column content-box-column content-box-column-1 col-lg-12 col-md-12 col-sm-12 fusion-content-box-hover content-box-column-last content-box-column-last-in-row\"><div class=\"col content-box-wrapper content-wrapper-background link-area-link-icon content-icon-wrapper-yes icon-hover-animation-fade\" data-animationOffset=\"top-into-view\"><div class=\"heading icon-left\"><h2 class=\"content-box-heading fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"--h2_typography-font-size:24px;--fontSize:24;line-height:1.5;\">Summary<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"content-container\">\n<p>This study is the first histologic evaluation of maxresorb\u00ae\u00a0inject (an injectable biphasic calcium phosphate (IBCP)) compared to cerabone\u00ae\u00a0(a bovine xenograft (BX)) in humans six months after socket preservation according to the principles of guided bone regeneration.<br \/>\nAfter tooth extraction, the alveolar ridge of 21 patients was augmented with maxresorb\u00ae\u00a0inject in the test group, while 20 patients in the control group received cerabone\u00ae.<\/p>\n<p>Six months after augmentation, the authors found the following results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Qualitative histologic analysis showed complete integration of the biomaterial and no inflammatory tissue reaction, indicating the biocompatibility of the bone grafts and the surrounding tissue in both groups.<\/li>\n<li>Histomorphometric analysis showed comparable results in terms of newly formed bone and residual biomaterial, with no significant difference found across groups.<\/li>\n<li>Statistical significance between groups was found in the result of soft tissue percentage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To conclude, maxresorb\u00ae\u00a0inject and cerabone\u00ae showed good osteoconductivity and biocompatibility with comparable new bone formation six months after alveolar ridge preservation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\" style=\"--awb-text-transform:none;\"><h4><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">The demand for Synthetic (alloplastic) bone grafting materials<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Even though the risk of disease transmission from bovine bone grafts is neglectable, some people reject the use of xenografts, also because of ethical and religious reasons.<br \/>\nAn alternative are alloplastic biomaterials, that are developed based on the understanding of the nanostructure of bone and the organic-inorganic interactions of the bone matrix. The ultimate goal is to achieve the ultrastructure and morphology of natural biominerals.<br \/>\nAlloplastic grafts for dental purposes are usually based on hydroxyapatite (HA), beta-tricalcium phosphate (\u03b2-TCP) and alpha-tricalcium phosphate (\u03b1-TCP) and combinations thereof. Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) is formed by the fusion of HA and \u03b2-TCP in various ratios, such as 60:40 in maxresorb\u00ae\u00a0inject.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Aim of the Study<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Since no randomization clinical trial to date has evaluated the use of IBCP, the aim of the presented randomized clinical trial was to evaluate and compare the safety and efficacy of the above-mentioned IBCP and a BX in alveolar ridge preservation using qualitative and quantitative histologic analysis.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div Procedure<\/h2>\n<p>After extraction, the surgeon performed curettage of the alveolus to remove granulation tissue.<br \/>\nIn both groups (see flow charts of the randomization process in Figure 1), the graft material was gently pressed into the socket and covered with a resorbable membrane made of porcine collagen (collprotect\u00ae\u00a0membrane, botiss biomaterials, Zossen, Germany) (Figure 2\u00a0and\u00a0Figure 3).<br \/>\nAfter six months, bone biopsy was taken from the central part of the preexisting defect using a 2.5 mm trephine drill and implants were placed using a standardized class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-10\"><h2>Discussion<\/h2>\n<p>At the time of the study, according to the authors, this is the first published human histologic study on the use of injectable biphasic calcium phosphate (maxresorb inject\u00ae), composed of a water-based gel with nano-hydroxyapatite particles and biphasic calcium phosphate granules (60% HA and 40% \u03b2\u2013TCP) in socket preservation, and its comparison with BX (cerabone\u00ae).<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Comparison of the study results to studies on biphasic calcium phosphate in maxillary sinus model<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Previous comparative histologic studies of BX and BCP were mostly based on the maxillary sinus model. All in all, the results regarding the comparison of new bone formation between BCP and BX are in agreement with the author\u2019s findings 6 months after socket preservation.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">IBCP composition and its effect on bone formation<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>A comparative histological evaluation of BCPs with different ratios of HA and \u03b2-TCP in socket preservation showed that BCP composed of HA (60.28%) and \u03b2-TCP (39.72%) had the highest percentage of NB after 6 months of healing. The IBCP used in this study has granules with almost the same HA and \u03b2-TCP ratio. During bone healing, \u03b2-TCP is rapidly resorbed, and volume stability of the graft until it is replaced by new bone is provided by a high proportion of HA, which is a more stable and less resorbable component of BCP. These observations are consistent with the here presented qualitative and quantitative histologic findings that 6 months after socket preservation residual particles of biomaterial (IBCP: 13.1 \u00b1 14.07%, BX: 17.89 \u00b1 11.81%,\u00a0<em>p<\/em>\u00a0= 0.121, Mann\u2014Whitney U Test) were integrated into the NB in both groups.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Effect of injectability of ICBP on handling and application<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Due to its viscosity, the biomaterial was easily applied into the extraction sockets and filled them completely. In addition, the investigated biomaterial in this study was also pre-filled in a sterilized plastic syringe, which expedited the surgical procedure and reduced the treatment burden.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>To summarize, both IBCP and BX provide comparable histomorphometric results for newly formed bone. Based on qualitative histologic findings one can conclude that both biomaterials have good osteoconductive properties and biocompatibility.
