In addition to autogenous bone, which is still considered to be the gold standard for jaw augmentation procedures, various bone substitutes and membranes have shown promising results especially in lateral grafting applications. In contrast to grafts derived from patient\u00b4s own bone, the use of such biomaterials is not accompanied with donor site morbidity which leads to high patient acceptance. Bone substitute materials of di\u00aderent origin (bovine, synthetic or allogenic) have distinct biochemical properties, which are useful for indication oriented grafting procedures. However, soft tissue ingrowth and incomplete graft regeneration can be risks when using bone substitutes. Therefore, the use of barrier membranes is required. Of particular advantage are pericardium-based collagen membranes that can provide a long barrier function. Moreover, their native collagen structure, biocompatibility, tissue integration and nutrition transfer can significantly contribute to the graft stabilization.<br \/>\nIn addition, angio-selective membranes enable a fast transmembrane vascularization, which can be of crucial importance for the early stages of bone healing.
