Onlay block bone grafts are often used to reconstruct non-contained as well as complex defects with both horizontal and vertical components. Conventionally, these blocks are harvested from intraoral or extraoral donor sites, which can increase surgical complexity, extend operative time, and introduce the risk of donor-site morbidity.
Allogeneic bone blocks, such as maxgraft® blocks and maxgraft® bonebuilder, offer an effective and less invasive alternative. These blocks are typically fixated using non-resorbable titanium screws, which must be removed before implant placement. In some cases, this may necessitate reopening a larger flap, increasing patient morbidity.
Using the magnesium-based NOVAMag® fixation screws, the need for screw removal is eliminated, as these screws are fully resorbable. This allows stable fixation of the allogeneic block while reducing surgical steps and minimizing soft tissue trauma.
In this video, the step-by-step application of the NOVAMag® fixation screws is demonstrated, showing how they can be used effectively to achieve a stable ridge augmentation in complex defects.
