Biocompatibility and Biodegradation of a Native, Porcine Pericardium Membrane

The principle of GTR/GBR has long been established for treating bone and periodontal defects. In addition, to nonabsorbable barriers, various collagens have become accepted as membrane materials for separating the graft from soft tissue.

Methods:
The morphological structure of two different native collagen membranes was examined using a scanning electron microscope. For biocompatibility testing, membranes were incubated with SaOs-2 osteoblastlike cells. Biodegradation pattern was performed in a dog model with simultaneous bone augmentation in the lateral anterior maxilla.

Results / Conclusion:
In vitro, Jason® membrane showed considerable cell proliferation, which was significantly superior to the other collagen membrane. Both examined membranes indicate a high level of biocompatibility. Both are resorbed without inflammation.
