Made from a completely resorbable, biodegradable, magnesium metal alloy, NOVAMag® fixation screws are ideal for securing barrier membranes, bone grafts and bone augmenting material. The screws provide support during the critical healing period and are completely resorbed within approximately one year1, 2. The screws integrate within the bone as they degrade, with new bone forming up to the surface of the screws3.

Five sizes for all your fixation needs

The smallest screw (the NOVAMag® fixation screw XS) is specifically designed for securing membranes, such as the NOVAMag® membrane, the collagen membranes Jason® membrane or collprotect® membrane, as well as non-resorbable PTFE membranes, such as permamem®.

NOVAMag® fixation screws S-XL can be used for bone block fixation. Because the fixation screws are resorbable, remnants of the screws pose no risk during dental implant placement and can be left to completely resorb over a period of approximately one year after their implantation.

Biodegradable metals are a class of metal that when implanted will gradually degrade and be completely resorbed. The degradation products are then metabolized by the human body.

The NOVAMag® fixation screw has had a specially applied surface treatment to delay the onset of the magnesium metal degradation. This enables the screw to provide a secure fixation during the critical healing period.

As it degrades the magnesium metal is transformed into magnesium salts, which are then resorbed by the body1-3. As the magnesium salts are resorbed, they are replaced by the patients’ native bone.

The NOVAMag® fixation screws resorb over a period of approximately 1 year.

The NOVAMag® fixation screw provides a secure fixation of barrier membranes and/or bone augmentation material. Unlike conventional fixation screws composed of steel or titanium, the NOVAMag® fixation screw is completely degradable. Despite its degradative properties, the NOVAMag® fixation screw is stable during the necessary healing period. Compared to other degradable fixation screw devices, the NOVAMag® fixation screws have superior mechanical properties1.
The NOVAMag® fixation screw XS can be used for securing barrier membranes such as the NOVAMag® membrane as well as collagen and PTFE membranes.
During the degradation of the magnesium metal, the metallic structure is transformed into magnesium salts and a small volume of hydrogen gas is released. A small accumulation of the gas may collect around each device and is visible in X-rays1. The release of hydrogen gas might present as a slight swelling of the soft tissues. The magnesium salts keep the original shape and position of the screw until they are resorbed by the body.
