The use of biomaterials in implantology:
different materials for different indications
Dimensional and structural alterations of the alveolar process are well-documented consequences of tooth extraction, with several factors influencing bone modelling, such as flapless extractions, ridge preservation techniques and immediate implant placement. Over the years, several biomaterials have been used for alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) procedures, however, is extremely difficult to find an “ideal” biomaterial suitable for all clinical scenarios. In this lecture, several techniques will be described to guide the clinician in the decision-making process of biomaterial selection for ARP procedures. The importance of keratinized mucosa in enhancing peri-implant health has been confirmed by recent systematic reviews and consensus conferences. Connective tissue grafts (CTGs) are still considered to be the gold standard for these procedures; however, palatal harvesting is not always accepted by patients, is time consuming and post-operative morbidity and limited availability are factors to be considered. The use of an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) in soft tissue peri-implant augmentation can provide a valid alternative to CTGs, making this procedure simple, fast and predictable, with excellent dimensional stability and aesthetic results.
Furthermore, the handling, advantages, and the indications of a novel completely resorbable, biodegradable magnesium membrane (NOVAMag®) will be discussed with participants in a hands-on format. Several clinical cases with different complexity will be presented to guide the clinician in the appropriate decision-making process on the use and the handling of the membrane.
Participants will learn when the use of NOVAMag® is appropriated for horizontal and vertical GBR procedures as well as combined defects. Furthermore, the NOVAMag® SHIELD technique will be presented, highlighting its simplicity and predictability.
