The goal of the study was to compare the efficacy of two treatment modalities for deep periodontal intrabony defects using a recently published novel minimal invasive approach.
Methods:
Deep isolated intrabony defects (n=30 patients) were treated according to the entire papilla preservation (EPP) technique, either with a combination of Emdogain® and small cerabone® granules (test) or were debrided only (control). Clinical outcomes were compared 12 months post-operative.
Results:
– Uneventful healing at all treated sites
– Statistically significant PD reduction (test: 6.5 ± 2.65 mm, control: 6.2 ± 1.33 mm) and CAL gain (test: 6.3 ± 2.5 mm, control: 5.83 ± 1.12 mm) in both groups (p≤0.001)
– No statistical differences for PD reduction, CAL gain and gingival recession increase were found between test and control group
Conclusion:
The authors concluded that the EPP technique, due to the maintenance of the interdental papilla, provides optimal conditions both for the early healing phase and the stability of the clinical result. The addition of biomaterials did not improve clinical parameters.
