Anghelescu and colleagues studied the inflammatory-reduced angiogenesis after augmentation with different biomaterials and the resulting integration potential of the materials.
Methods:
Tibadefects in rabbits were augmented with either cerabone®, a pure beta-TCP or Bioglass. After a healing period of six months biopsies were harvested and immunhistochemically analysed. Angiogenesis and bone remodeling were determined with the help of different marker molecules.
Results:
The results showed a significantly higher bone formation around beta-TCP and cerabone® particles compared to Bioglass. Furthermore, a higher formation of vessels and higher vessel lumen was observed. The results indicated a tendency towards better activity of cerabone® comparing with beta-TCP.
Conclusion:
The authors concluded that cerabone® provides a matrix that supports the formation of capillaries and due to its osteoconductive properties facilitates new bone formation.
