A new study about a novel liquid carrier system for enamel matrix proteins in combination with collacone® has recently been published:

Objectives:

The goal of this study was to determine the potential of Osteogain®, a liquid carrier for enamel matrix derivative, in combination with collacone® as a regenerative therapy for extraction socket management. The collacone® sponge was loaded with Osteogain® and the protein resorption and release as well as osteoblast binding and differentiation were investigated.

Results:

The proteins in Osteogain® were efficiently absorbed by collacone® and gradually released after a 10-day time period. Osteogain® induced a 50% increase in cell adhesion to collacone® and significantly stimulated cell differentiation as evidenced by the upregulation of osteoblast differentiation markers.

Conclusions and clinical relevance:

The combination of collacone® and Osteogain® offers a potential regenerative approach in extraction sockets to lower dimensional changes of the alveolar ridge. Osteogain® as a new formulation of the clinically utilized enamel matrix derivative (Straumann® Emdogain®) allows an efficient coating and retention of the proteins, thus an efficient delivery of the bioactive components to the site of action. At the same time, collacone®, which was designed for the use in extraction sockets, serves as an appropriate matrix for protein absorption. In vivo studies are currently underway to prove the combination approach.
