Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium

Vitamin D plays a major role in maintaining calcium balance and bone remodeling 1,2.

On the one hand, the vitamin D signaling pathway regulates calcium absorption via the intestine and thus contributes to an adequate calcium supply. On the other hand, vitamin D is also involved in the dynamic bone remodeling and mineralization processes 1. The signaling pathways triggered by vitamin D and the vitamin D receptor influence many important metabolic processes in the body 1. These include signaling pathways regulating growth hormones such as transforming growth factor β (TGFβ), epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin growth factor 1 (IGF-1), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) 1. Vitamin D is therefore a relevant building block for healthy bone growth and its maintenance .
